From overgrown backyards to lifestyle blocks and firebreaks, compact machines make clearing work faster and safer than hand tools.

Check the rules first: clearing native vegetation in WA may require a permit, and local councils can have tree protection rules. Check with your council and the relevant state department before clearing.

Raking scrub and debris Excavator rake, e.g. rake for R22

Removing a stump with an excavator

  1. Clear around the stump and expose the main roots.
  2. Cut the roots with the bucket teeth or a ripper, working around the stump.
  3. Lever the stump by digging under one side and lifting gently — don't overload the machine.
  4. Lift out and fill the hole, compacting as you go.

Machine choice

Safety

  • Never lift or lever beyond the machine's stable capacity.
  • Watch for falling branches and keep people clear.
  • Check for overhead powerlines.
