An auger attachment is one of the best-value add-ons you can buy. Fence lines, pergolas, shade sails, sheds and tree planting all go dramatically faster.
Choosing an auger
- Match the auger to your machine — see the auger for R18, R22 drilling rig, R32 auger or the R10/R13/R15 auger.
- Skid steer owners can use rotary drills such as the RS06/RS07 rotary drill.
- Choose bit diameters to suit your posts and footing specification.
Set out and drill
- Set a string line along the fence and mark each post position.
- Position the machine so the auger hangs vertically over the mark.
- Start slowly to stop the bit wandering, then increase speed.
- Lift regularly to clear spoil from the hole.
- Check plumb and depth as you go.
- Move to the next hole keeping the machine on the same side of the line.

Perth tips
- In loose sand, holes can collapse — set posts soon after drilling.
- On limestone, use a rock bit or break the cap first.
- In Hills gravel and clay, drill when the ground isn't rock-hard in summer.
