Many owners use their machine in bursts — a big project, then weeks or months off. Correct storage avoids flat batteries, fuel problems and seized parts.

Short-term storage (days to weeks)

  • Park on firm, level ground with the bucket and blade lowered.
  • Clean off mud and clay.
  • Grease pivot points.
  • Remove the key and secure the machine.

Longer storage (a month or more)

  • Clean thoroughly, including the undercarriage and radiator.
  • Fuel: follow the manual's advice — many recommend storing with a full tank to reduce condensation.
  • Battery: disconnect it or use a suitable battery maintainer.
  • Hydraulics: retract cylinders where practical to protect exposed rods, and wipe rods with a light film of oil if the manual recommends it.
  • Shelter: store under cover to protect seats, hoses and rubber tracks from UV.
  • Pests: check for rodents, which can chew wiring.

Security

  • Store in a locked yard or shed where possible.
  • Remove keys and consider a hitch or track lock.
  • Record serial numbers and take photos.
  • Talk to your insurer about theft cover.
