Mini excavators are easy to learn, but good habits from day one make you faster, safer and kinder to the machine. Consider a formal operator course too.
Before you start the engine
- Walk around the machine: leaks, damaged hoses, loose pins, track condition.
- Check engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil and fuel.
- Grease pivot points.
- Read the operator's manual for your machine's control pattern.
Learning the controls
- Practise on flat, open ground away from people, buildings and slopes.
- Learn each function separately — boom, arm, bucket and swing — before combining them.
- Move slowly and smoothly — jerky movements waste time and rock the machine.
- Combine movements gradually once each function feels natural.
Digging technique
- Keep the bucket teeth angled into the dig and curl as you pull back.
- Take shallow, full bites rather than deep ones that stall the hydraulics.
- Put the blade down on the dig side for stability.
- Dump spoil far enough back that it can't slide into the hole.
Slopes and stability
- Travel straight up and down slopes where possible, not across.
- Keep the bucket low when travelling.
- Don't swing loads downhill on a slope.
- Stay away from trench and excavation edges.
Common beginner mistakes
- Digging without locating services — use Before You Dig Australia.
- Lifting loads beyond the machine's stable capacity.
- Forgetting the swing radius — keep people clear.
- Leaving the bucket raised when parked. Always lower attachments to the ground.
